The use of 3D laser scanning is new to the marine industry; however, there are numerous opportunities for application of this advanced technology. This paper illustrates how the versatile Light Induced Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) technology can be applied to all phases of shipbuilding, as well as to the engineering and maintenance of offshore rigs and retrofit work of FSOs and FPSOs. Recently Provide Solutions piloted a test with Polar Tankers, Inc., in Avondale, Louisiana, to demonstrate the time and cost savings 3D laser scanning could generate in the fabrication, pre-erection, post-erection and general accuracy control phases of shipbuilding. This paper follows this pilot test from scanning to virtual fitting and offers conclusions on the versatility of 3D scanning technology applied to the marine industry.
