Current guidance for calculating US-flag towing vessel stability date from over 35 years ago. In the intervening time, towing vessel design has evolved to the point that the current guidance may not be conservative. This paper examines those changes and gives examples of how the designs have evolved. Finally, recommendations are given to naval architects calculating towing vessel stability.
