This paper presents the findings of a collaborative study conducted by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Tessler Research Associates, LLC (TRA). The study investigated the use of the inverse finite element method (iFEM) to build a structural digital twin of a simplified containership model. A direct finite element analysis was conducted using a high-fidelity shell model for a series of simple loading conditions, which provided reference solutions. Strains from the reference solutions were used as strain sensor input at discrete locations in an iFEM model, and the subsequent solutions compared to the reference solutions.
