This paper describes a freeboard measuring system, designed and used by the Coast Guard to quickly and accurately measure freeboards across a wide variety of cutter classes. The Freeboard chain system has proven accurate and repeatable on cutters ranging in size from the 47' Motor Lifeboat, to the CGC Healy icebreaker. After initial development at the Coast Guard YARD, CG YARD Hull Branch engineers proved the concept by testing and refining the freeboard chain system in a variety of weather conditions on various class cutters during their availabilities at the YARD. The system has since become an integral part of the CG YARD's deadweight survey tool kit.
