Methods to predict temperature profile and residual stress were developed specifically for use with the high deposition (HiDep) process for welding. HiDep is a newly developed welding technique that results in very low distortion welds for either butt-welded structure or attachment of T-stiffeners to plate using dual fillet welds. The method relies on the use of an auxiliary heat application to the base plate immediately prior to welding. In order to develop the process for the wide variety of weld sizes and plate thicknesses, finite element models of various aspects of the process were developed and used to assist in the process development.
