The combination Container / RORO ship El Faro was lost with all hands, on the morning of October 1st, 2015, off the Bahamas, close to the Northwest eye wall of Category 3 hurricane Joaquin. The Marine Forensic Engineering practice at CSRA was hired by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) working in close cooperation with the US Coast Guard Marine Safety Center (USCG-MSC), to perform dynamic analyses of the events leading up to the sinking. This paper describes the broad range of work and analyses performed as the investigation moved through three phases, and the eventual results.
