A feasibility study for a System for Total Environmental Protection (STEP) or "Zero Waste" concept onboard ocean going vessels is summarized in this paper. The study's objective was to determine if this concept using advanced waste and wastewater treatment technologies is viable for typical tankers, offshore support vessels and frigates. The study reveals that by utilizing STEP, it is possible to treat combustible waste and wastewaters onboard while reducing operating costs. The use of STEP vs. existing practices results in a return on investment of 39%, 11% and 29% for tankers, offshore support vessels and frigates, respectively.
