Hull girder strength is the most fundamental strength of a ship structure and several calculation methods, especially various approximation methods have been proposed. However, due to the complexity of a practical ship structure, the accuracy of a typical method should be further evaluated and causes of approximation error be identified. Therefore, in this paper a strain energy analysis scheme is developed to conduct evaluation of various ship hull girder ultimate strength calculation methods. With nonlinear strength analysis results as benchmark data, the hull girder ultimate strength calculation method used in the IACS Common Structural Rules of Bulk Carrier and Oil Tanker is evaluated with the proposed scheme. In addition, sensitivity analyses are also performed to show the contribution of each ship structural element to the total ship hull girder ultimate strength.
