Lean transformation of present production systems in multiple industries has proven to reduce waste and make the assembly of interim products considerably more efficient in the future improved state. In an earlier paper, the optimization of the panel assembly line of shipyards using a value stream mapping methodology demonstrated a considerable reduction in man-hours. However, as production downstream becomes more complex, it becomes more difficult and less self evident where and how to make the transformations for the future improved state. Therefore, the authors' of this paper have undertaken the task to investigate the continual adaptation of the lean transformation method for the complex downstream process of built-up panel assembly.
