With the introduction of Goal Based Standards by IMO, there is a flexible approach for alternative designs in order to obtain the same results as the designs subjected to prescriptive regulation. The aim of this paper is to investigate the compliance of the existing prescriptive or risk based regulation with GBS regarding the residual strength of a ship (the strength of the ship after damage). Furthermore, suggestions for improvement are made both for the existing regulation in order to integrate this important factor, as well as for the GBS themselves in order to be more realistic and practically applicable.
