The paper describes the development of composite rigging systems for large sailing superyachts. The mechanical properties of available rigging materials are described, along with the design and manufacturing techniques employed in the series production of PBO rigging elements. The development of a type approval procedure by Germanischer Lloyd in cooperation with Future Fibres is described, and finally the benefits to the owner and crew of using composite rigging two case studies are explored.
