This paper gives an overview of the present status in the world with regard to use of gas as a fuel in ships, using the large DNV experience and knowledge as base. In Norway the number of LNG fuelled ships in operation has grown from 0 to 10 ships in the last 8 years, and the basics of some of these ships will be given. The gas engine fundamentals will be outlined, as well as the basic framework for safe installations and the status of international rules.
