Experimental prediction of sloshing loads for a membrane tank LNG ship requires both careful planning and execution. Challenges include identification of critical combinations of tank filling, ship heading and sea-state, utilization of suitable instrumentation, post-processing of vast amounts of data, statistical treatment of loading parameters and scaling of model test pressure loads to full-scale. MARINTEK has in the last few years performed extensive sloshing tests with different tank geometries. This paper presents the experimental approaches that have been developed.
