A method for the calculation of panel shapes for sail cutting purposes is presented. Each panel in the three-dimensional sail is modeled by a series of planar patches which approximate a developable surface. An algorithm for distributing these patches is described. A sample sail design is presented in detail. The method has been found to perform well in practice, and is employed routinely in production by Horizon Sails.
