Defining a meaningful subsalt velocity trend is a major challenge when i) tomography is compromised by poor illumination and/or ii) there is little or no subsalt well information. In such a case, rock physics based velocity modeling can be helpful in building a geologically feasible velocity model. The key is to derive a 3D representation of effective stress of the Earth based on some knowledge of geology and thermal history of the basin and translate the effective stress to seismic velocity. Here we present a case study in which we applied a rock physics guided velocity modeling in an area with very limited well information to produce a low frequency subsalt trend.
