ABSTRACT

Controlled source electromagnetic (CSEM) simulations based on the electromagnetic response of a given model use the numerical solution of Maxwell’s equations for numerous frequencies and source/receiver positions, see for instance Streich (2009). The computation of all these forward solutions, as well as their related gradients and sensibilities, are also the most time consuming part of an inversion scheme, in particular when large surveys and 3D models are mandatory. This work explores the possibility of using an a priori model order reduction (MOR) technique to compute the generalized electromagnetic response for all the parameters, i.e. all the frequencies and source positions, at once. The methodology follows a proper generalized decomposition approach (PGD) that rapidly provides the 3D electromagnetic response for any value of these two parameters. Thus, this strategy is particularly useful whenever many realizations of modeling are required. Results from a canonical 3D layered model are used to exemplify the potential of this methodology.
