ABSTRACT
I present two examples of microseismicity in the Midland basin where the source mechanism nodal planes indicate shearing is persistently aligned with the hydraulic fracture or, alternatively, orthogonal to the hydraulic fracture. I consider arguments for both possible solutions where shearing may be due to hydraulic-fracture opening being accommodated on weak interfaces intersected, such as bedding planes, or the shearing may occur on the hydraulic fracture itself.
