It is common to misinterpret impact-cratering structures, in a seismic record, as one of several circular endogenic type structures (e.g. volcanoes, diapirs, "flower" structures, etc.). Nonetheless if the interpretation is conducted following the basic principles of seismic stratigraphy, and fault mechanical stratigraphy, it is possible to differentiate an impact crater from other type of geological structures, this is mainly due to its almost instantaneous generation, and its distinctive structural features, which leaves a distinctive signature in the seismic stratigraphic record.
