ABSTRACT

We present a novel, geomechanically based approach to basin modeling, the primary objective of which is robust prediction of pore pressure and effective stress. Models incorporate the geologic history of a system, accounting for processes including deposition, compaction and structural deformation in a fully coupled thermal-poro-mechanical framework. We describe important features of the model, we present a workflow for construction and calibration of models to subsurface data and interpretation, we demonstrate an application of the approach to a mini-basin in voluminous salt, and we demonstrate that results differ significantly from those of a conventional basin model.
