We derived an improved AVO equation based on a linearized approximation of PP-wave reflection coefficients. The derived equation contains only two elastic parameters, P- and S-wave impedance, and has better accuracy than the existing approximations. Numerical tests show that the new equation is also less sensitive to the error of its intrinsic parameter ( ) than that of Fatti’s formula ( = / ).
Then we used the improved equation to invert the P- and S-wave impedance simultaneously. Compared with the inversion using Fatti’s equation, using improved equation is more suitable for large impedance contrast data and less ill-posed. Besides, the impedances, instead of their reflectivity, can be inverted directly, and thus avoiding the errors involved by a conversion afterwards. Both of synthetic and real data tests show the feasibility of the inversion scheme.
