ABSTRACT

While the accuracy of seismic exploration is developing, the attenuation of internal multiples becomes more and more important as the present seismic imaging techniques assume there are only primaries in seismic data. This paper comes up with a new thought to suppress internal multiples with mathematical morphology filtering. Firstly, the theory of virtual seismic events is used to predict the travel time curves of internal multiples. Secondly, mathematical morphology filtering is applied to remove the internal multiples instead of traditional methods like matching subtraction method and F-K filtering or Radon transform. Compared with the traditional methods, mathematical morphology filtering has its advantage in waveform separation. It uses the continuity of wavelet in space direction to attenuate internal multiples in time domain and get a better result when internal multiple events overlap with reflection events in seismic data. Most noteworthy is that mathematical morphology filtering not only has higher efficiency in attenuating internal multiples itself without any transformation between different domains, but also reduce the calculation amount during the construction of internal multiples when combined with virtual seismic events method to predict the travel time curves of internal multiples. On the other hand, virtual seismic events method makes mathematical morphology filtering more suitable for suppressing internal multiples.
