ABSTRACT

Coarse wavefield modeling enables low-cost seismic imaging, but numerical dispersion artifacts may degrade the accuracy of the resulting image. Accurate spatial modeling operators may be chosen to lessen spatial numerical dispersion artifacts. We derive a simple post-simulation filter for the common second-order accurate finite-difference operator that removes temporal numerical dispersion artifacts as a function of time step and frequency only, independent of the propagation path. We show that combining an accurate spatial operator and the derived filter allow for a low-cost, dispersion-free, reverse time migration and full-waveform inversion. The proposed methods are simple to integrate into existing work-flows. We demonstrate the process on synthetic data.
