During a hydraulic fracturing operation, microseismic monitoring is a key technique to track and to help understand hydraulically induced fracture systems. In addition to hypocenters, estimated stimulated volume, and overall fracture network geometry, such monitoring can provide failure mechanism information, which can be used for further stress field analysis. In this paper, we introduce a commonly used machine learning method, cluster analysis, into microseismic failure mechanism analysis. It provides a new and automatic approach to analyze spatial failure mechanism variation. In addition, this information can help further spatial in-situ stress inversion.
