ABSTRACT

As an extension to the Shell proprietary stochastic inversion engine, a method has been developed to predict lithology and fluid types in seismic inversion. The method determines facies based on indicator variables, which is similar to Indicator Kriging. In comparison to the conventional multi-step facies inversion method, the presented method directly characterizes facies distribution in the inversion. Realistic inversion results are obtained in combination with the built-in geological constraint of the algorithm. Results of a 3D inversion on a marine survey for a deepwater channel-lobe system are shown to demonstrate the method.
