Marine seismic acquisition has been established as a very efficient method that employs big and powerful vessels that can tow very large streamer spreads, for instance 12 to 18 streamers, 8 km in length, with 100-m crossline separation. In this paper we introduce a new type of marine acquisition that uses wave gliders-autonomous marine vehicles-powered solely by waves and solar power, which tow a small, multimeasurement 3D sensor array. We will discuss the results of the first field experiment with 3D sensor arrays towed by wave gliders and processing and survey design aspects of this new type of marine seismic acquisition.
