Seismic data has proven to be the most detailed subsurface description for hydrocarbon exploration. The valuable information imbedded in the data may be misinterpreted unless made visible in its true relative form. We introduce a new and very robust scheme for scaling seismic data before displaying them. This scheme is based on the histogram-equalization technique originally developed in the imageprocessing field. We refer to the scheme as histogram whitening (HW). The HW method has the advantage of preserving some critical amplitude characteristics while balancing the rest of amplitudes. It is especially useful for stratigraphic interpretation when dealing with gained data.
