Research and Development in the geophysical arena have been critical to the continuing successful mineral exploration and exploitation activities of Anglo American. These activities span the entire spectrum from grass roots prospecting for new mineral resources, detailed investigations of specific anomalies, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies, mining, beneficiation, mine closure and environmental management. The Geophysical Services Department (GSD) of AATS (Anglo American Technical Services), now a totally independent consulting company, has for many years provided the geophysical input to Anglo’s exploration and exploitation activities. This paper describes the technological innovation and approach that has contributed to the success of a major mining company, and at the same time has been necessary to ensure the ongoing growth and development of a geophysical consultancy in a competitive environment.
