Sustainability strategies in oil and gas are generally tied to a programmatic approach, that starts with understanding the relevance of ESG reporting to then engage in Net-Zero plans’ goals cascaded down to Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3, to reduce, mitigate or translate the Green House Gases (GHG) emissions. The approach has been incrementally communicated, and even if it intends to engage all audiences, to revert a public perception that has been not always positive, no significant step-changes have yet occurred. This paper is a contribution to disseminate the information available about Scope 3: concepts, measurements methodologies and perception of the public.

A few examples of Scope 3 measurements and considerations are provided, to illustrate the magnitude of the problem to integrate these emissions in the GHG workflows, to exemplify the need of individual emission commitments, and to expose potential pathways for meeting Net-Zero targets.
