In support of drilling a production infill well planned in 2019 at an oil field from offshore Gulf of Mexico (GOM), ExxonMobil carried out internal seismic reprocessing in 2018 to meet various business objectives. Our processing flow included raw-data full wavefield inversion (FWI) applied to an ocean bottom node (OBN) data set acquired in 2014 to improve the salt and subsalt velocity model. We demonstrate in this case study that, a properly implemented FWI, when combined with full-azimuth, long-offset, and low-frequency OBN data, was able to substantially improve the salt and subsalt velocities over the legacy model, leading to significant improvement in subsalt imaging and reduced project turnaround time.
