Abstract

The monodiameter well is a breakthrough in the industry. This technology allows multiple strings of the same size drilling liner to be installed in a well without a decrease in internal diameter (ID). The elimination of reducing ID is accomplished by an over-expansion of the monodiameter drilling liner and the base casing in the overlap section. The potential benefits of expandable tubular technology are significant. With conventional casing, each new casing string set in the hole reduces the internal diameter of the hole by approximately 20 percent overriding this discrepancy monodiameter well exhibits the ultimate diametric efficiencies-a constant inside diameter (ID) from the top of the well to its TD significantly reducing the casing size. In Offshore the reduction in casing sizes allows a reduction in riser hookload because of these reductions, a smaller drilling vessel such as a third generation semisubmersible with a small riser can drill in deep water depths which is less expensive than a fifth generation drill ship and significantly lowers monodiameter well drilling costs. This paper briefly discusses the monodiameter drilling, potential savings realized when wellbores are slimmed using expandable systems in onshore. Intensive calculations for cost comparison of a conventional and monodiameter drilling are shown. Its, Environmental impacts, applications, limitations, current status of the technology, challenges ahead and latest developments are thoroughly discussed in this work.

Introduction

One of the most significant investments in the oil industry is the cost of developing a well. Any technology that reduces drilling costs, digs deeper, and improves the probability of reaching oil or gas resources would have enormous value. Concept of monodiameter well shows how the recent development of expandable tubular technology has the potential to revolutionize the energy production.

The traditional method of drilling oil and gas wells has been in use for almost 100 years. It continues to be used all around the world, regardless of any oil company or location. However, as oil and gas reserves are found at ever greater depths, often in deep waters offshore, the costs of the traditional approach rise rapidly. If a way could be found to reduce the size of rigs, increase the depth that rigs could drill and regulate the size of drills and piping, a drilling revolution could begin.

The monodiameter well is a breakthrough in the oil and gas industry. This technology allows multiple strings of the same size drilling liner to be installed in a well without a decrease in internal diameter (ID). The elimination of reducing ID is accomplished by an over-expansion of the monodiameter drilling liner and the base casing in the overlap section. The benefit of the monodiameter well construction process is that it reduces total drilling costs, especially in challenging areas, and enables operators to maintain the well's optimum completion diameter. Monodiameter wells eliminate the telescoping effect, allowing operators to slim down the top of the well while increasing the well diameter at TD. Monodiameter well designs use SET technology to create one continuous internal diameter from surface to TD.
