This paper explores the current history of subsea electrically driven functionality as well as provides recommendation to the industry on how to move forward. This history includes the drivers, features, field experiences, evolving cost picture and the success and failures of the products created during this 15-year journey. What has led the industry towards the solutions developed, how have those solutions lived up to their promises as far as lifetime and reliability are concerned? Why was it beneficial to store electric energy in batteries subsea for the operation of the system? and what should we consider going forward in how the industry should specify new technology?
