ABSTRACT:

This paper introduces and discusses the concept of "sustainable remediation", and highlights its benefits. A number of metrics are discussed which typically are not required to be considered at a feasibility level, but whose inclusion in the analysis of remediation options is relevant when evaluating the environmental sustainability of a remediation project. Within this context, two case studies at Italian National Interest Sites are discussed in which an explicit evaluation of sustainability of different options has driven the ultimate choice of remedy.
