Abstract

In 2015 the international community, under the aegis of the United Nations, adopted the “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” which is based on 17 “Sustainable Development Goals” (SDGs) that member Countries and all its individuals must pursue.

Eni, as integrated energy company, owned the SDGs and is sponsoring various initiatives to achieve them.

One of the promoted tasks regarded the collection and rationalization of the available knowledge in the bioenergy field, with particular focus on biogas produced via anaerobic digestion path and consequently biomethane. Such activity was intended to identify and pursuit business opportunities in complex and multiple biomass value chains.

This topic that was already central in the energy transition era became crucial for energy security in this particular historical period of global uncertainties and geopolitical turmoil.

In this context, Eni R&D developed an innovative and integrated tool, named “BioEnergy tool”, engaging EniProgetti to manage all the chemical and engineering aspects and Eni DIT for the digitalization process. This BioEnergy tool is a software suite that allows to perform technical and economic assessments of feedstock-to-biomethane plants, via anaerobic digestion (AD) and biogas upgrading processes. Aim of this tool is to provide biomethane expert developers with an integrated and smart object able to provide real-time information, simulating feed data and guiding users in building up the most convenient plant solution.
