Abstract

The accidents at sea caused by fires occurred onboard cruise vessels have highlighted the need to review the safety arrangements and procedures. As result of this new integrated safety systems have been introduced to support the operator during the decision making process when managing emergencies. These systems collect information and alarms from the safety systems and display them to the operator in a consistent way by the use of advanced colour graphic displays. Further developments in the area of safety enhancements are the decision support system and the people tracking system. Combined together, these systems are a comprehensive tool to fight the casualties but more effectiveness can be achieved by improving the situational awareness of the operator. A new safety centre has been designed in accordance to ergonomic principles to facilitate teamwork, exchange of information and training. The same design concept and approach can be applied in oil & gas vessels where fire hazards can have catastrophic consequences to the people and the environment.
