All six Coastal Districts of Western Region are potentially involved in Oil and Gas industry and virtually prone to possible impacts. With this in mind and to secure a "moment zero" snapshot of the area, eni Ghana decided to carry out a Social, Health and Environmental Baseline Survey. The survey was assigned to the University of Cape Coast - Department of Social Sciences and delivered on 2011.
Moreover, with the scope of identifying the most pressing needs in two of the Coastal Districts, i.e., Ellembelle and Jomoro, a Rapid Appraisal was also carried out involving local Authorities and Communities. Therefore, in close coordination with Local Assemblies and District Health Authorities and in line with their Multiyear Plan, two main priority areas where selected in the two districts. In consideration of the Public Health Needs identified, the parties agreed that the Community Health Planning Service (CHPS) Strategy of the MoH (ref.) could represent the most suitable approach to cope up in effective and efficient way with the unmatched health service demand. In this regard the construction/set up of 2 CHPS compounds was implemented in the two selected areas and preventive public health activities were supported as well to boost the strategy impact on local epidemiology.
