ABSTRACT:

In order to value and increase its presence in the local context, Eni North Africa BV has elaborated specific policies on health, safety, and environment (HSE), as well as on social investment. In the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding, signed in Tripoli on 22 September 2006 with the Gheddafi International Foundation for Charitable Association and Development (GDF) and the National Oil Corporation (NOC), among the key sectors identified for social projects and sustainable development, environment represents a cross-cutting issue and a strategic axis for each counterpart involved, both from National and Local level. In line with the HSE and Operational Sustainability Strategic Management Plan, an overall environmental strategy, going from pilot studies to a strategic planning exercise on territorial management, has been designed to provide local key actors with institutional and technical capacities to develop a local plan of action, mainly focused on the management and disposal of urban, medical and industrial waste. The strategy implies building skills for local analysis, planning and integrated development management, to ensure the best use of local resources, and to increase the impact of national and international investments on sustainable local development. The program is particularly characterized, among other, by training workshops addressed to Local authorities, experts and representatives of the private sector, local university, and civil society. The local plan of action for waste management and disposal that results from the course could also become a strategic reference for initiating useful partnerships with relevant regions, universities and services companies, in order to share and disseminate best practices as well as innovative technology
