The energy economy of the first decades of the new millennium will be powered by natural gas. New giant gas reservoirs in remote regions will be linked to end users by transmission pipelines. Material, construction and communication technology will back up overall reliability and transport efficiency over the operational lifetime. The scope of this paper is to provide an outline of the recent technological upgrading of pipeline industry, which is currently venturing on long distance high pressure high capacity high grade (LD. HP. HC. HG.) pipelines, as a competitive option for gas to market from remote regions. A brief introduction of the TAP (Trasporto Alta Pressione) project, which aims at providing a comprehensive experimental background for the use of X100 line pipes in real projects, will be given
