The development of deepwater heavy oil fields at PETROBRAS requires, as technical and economical criteria, the drilling and installation of sand control devices in long horizontal sections. Eventually, large diameter wells will also be required. Among the operational issues related to hydraulics, the following are critical: ECD restrictions, drilled cuttings transport, and gravel pack displacement (if this is the adopted sand control technique). This article discusses the operational limits for these operations, considering the well extension and low fracture gradients encountered in deepwater reservoirs. Such analysis is based in the use of computational tools developed in house, including transient cuttings transport analysis and gravel pack placement simulation. Fluid issues include the efforts required to minimize interaction between the drilling or completion fluid with the reservoir fluid. Invasion diagnosis and prevention and emulsion prevention are main challenges to be overcome. The strategy to achieve such requirements is also detailed in the article
