ABSTRACT:

The development of offshore activities in deep waters has determined an increasing demands for the reliable definition of the vertical profile of the sea currents for design and planning purposes. The naive approach of considering separately the current data at different depths can lead to severely erroneous results, as it does not account for the physical constraints that determine the shape of the profile itself. In recent years, methodologies have been proposed which aim to overcome this difficulty for the definition of extreme profiles, required for design purpose, for time series of profiles - as necessary e.g. for fatigue analysis or planning of site operations - and even for the short term forecast of profiles (now-cast), useful for short term planning, during on site activities. Relevant information are however quite scattered in the literature, and the present paper attempts to review them and provide a unified reference
