Total E&P has implemented on most of its assets a Risk-Based Inspection scheme aiming at improving the management of the integrity of pressure systems (pressure vessels, piping, tanks and heat exchangers) in offshore and onshore processes. Following recent trends in goal setting regulations, Total E&P has developed an alternative to in-house prescriptive policies for inspection management. It is based on risks to the people, the environment and the production and adapts the inspection efforts to equipment criticality level. This innovative approach yields the following benefits:

  • Integrity verification policy;

  • Structured assessment of equipment criticality;

  • Methodology to set up optimised inspection regimes;

  • Full audit trail.

After an introduction to the RBI principles and to Total E&P methodology, two case studies will focus on practical implementation feedback from one project at design stage (study performed with Bureau Veritas assistance) and another one from an existing asset
