ABSTRACT:

Most of the operating modes encountered during the life of onshore and offshore pipelines may be regarded as non-steady state operating conditions. This applies both to flowlines or gathering systems as well as to gas and liquid export systems. Actually, non-steady state conditions include not only "typical" transient operations (such a line start-up) but also operating modes where the line fluid-dynamic behaviour could generate a change in the operating parameters vs. time along the line profile. In order to properly address the system design as well as to support the definition of the operating procedures, the application of a transient multiphase flow simulation Code for pipeline process design should be regarded as a basic tool for the flow assurance engineer
