SAIPEM S.A. and its partners are currently developing a new type of platform well dedicated to the production of very remote targets. The CATWELL system is using a steel catenary drilling and production riser with a surface tree that connects to an horizontal conduit on the seabed before entering the well itself. The purpose of CATWELL is to give access to a larger reservoir drilling area (area 4 times larger) compared to the conventional system using a vertical drilling riser and an extended reach well. The paper will focus on the horizontal conductor pipe installation, drilling operations and steel catenary riser design. Preliminary cost indicators show that CATWELL compares favourably to subsea wells.
