ABSTRACT:

As the collective body of knowledge and experience related to deepwater cementing increased, it has become readily apparent that existing cement test procedures and methods are not applicable in a deepwater environment. In response to the fundamental limitations of the current standards, task groups of cementing experts from both ISO TC67/SC3/WG2 and API Subcommittee 10 were formed to prepare new international standards specifically for deepwater well cement testing and foamed cement testing. The deliverable from these efforts are two new standards: ISO/WD 10426-3, "Test methods for deepwater well cement formulations" and ISO/WD 10426-4, "Methods for atmospheric foamed cement slurry preparation and testing." In a related activity, the Minerals Management Service (MMS) and API formed a work group to communicate the best-demonstrated practices on the overall issue of annular flow prevention. The first document produced by the group is a new recommended practice entitled: API RP65 "Cementing shallow water flow zones in deep water wells". This document, together with the new ISO standards, provides for the first time, test methods and best practices specifically for deepwater well construction.
