ABSTRACT:

North Port Said gas fields in the Mediterranean sea is considered one of the important and promising fields in Egypt. Such area including some marginal fields which developed applying new economic construction technique (Aegypode platform) utilizing the drilling Jack up for installing such structure to get the maximum possible cost saving, which encourage the development of such marginal field and other similar field. The main design philosophy of this platforms due to space limitation is the criteria of high reliability and low power consumption with minimum production facilities to serve up to three wells. In spite of the limited structure size and space, The platform is provided also with helideck to maximize the operability and maintenance activity. Three Aegypodes from this type were installed in North Port Said concession (N.P.S.C.) during the last 4 years. During the last 2-3 years, we have faced several and frequent production shut down which having a heavy negative impact on the total gas production from Miocene fields in N.P.S.C. due to difficulties to restart such wells in rough sea season. Analyzing the reasons of the frequent shut down among two years, we can conclude the reasons of the encountered problems as follows:

    Sand presence in the produced gas stream and its effect on the topside facilities (piping, valves, etc).

  • ·

    Unavailability of gas detection system on the platform to detect any gas leakage.

  • ·

    Choke valves type and its piping configuration are not suitable.

  • ·

    High sensitivity and accuracy of the HIPPS (high integrity pressure protection) system.

Also other operation and maintenance problems were recorded and highlighted as major problems must be solved to guarantee continues and safe production and to improve the operability of this platforms specially in case of upset conditions, such problems are concluded as follows:

    Difficulty to get Helideck certification from Authorities as per ICAO rules.

  • ·

    The designed small boat landing is not allowing the receiving of service or crew boats.

  • ·

    Unavailability of refuge shelter with relevant facilities on the platform to serve the operation and maintenance crews in case of rough sea.
