ABSTRACT:

In order to assess the potential effects of the produced water released from platforms on the marine ecosystem, different physical, chemical and biological parameters, both along water column and in M. galloprovincialis tissues, were considered in a Monitoring plan carried out around 42 ENI off-shore platforms in the Adriatic Sea. Parameters selection were done according to the known mean composition of the produced water. Accumulation of heavy metals (Cu, As, Pb, Cr, Hg), benzene and toluene in mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis Lam.) and physical-chemical characteristics of the water column, as well as concentration of selected organic compounds in water, were investigated in an area extending 500 m from the platforms. In this work we present results concerning the first year of monitoring activities for 8 gas platforms, in the Northern Adriatic, and 1 oil platform, in the Southtern basin. First results show no perturbation directly due to the outfall of the produced water.
