Although driven by different motivations, scientific community and offshore industry show a convergence of interests in the development of technologies for observation and monitoring of the marine environment, especially in deep-water areas. Capability to carry out reliable, safe, and continuous observation and monitoring depends on the availability of techniques to operate at the sites efficiently on several temporal and spatial scales and according to a variety of objectives. Automatic monitoring systems are experiencing a rapid technological development and represent a test bed for a number of innovative technological solutions. The research activities performed by a number of companies and organisations in the last decade is the demonstration that it is now possible to overcome some of their most significant limitations. It is now possible to introduce working prototypes and begin thinking to the future routine applications of networks of automatic monitoring systems. The paper offers an overview of the main technologies developed by Tecnomare in a variety of contexts, underlining the specific potentialities and possible spin-offs for the offshore industry.
