In deep and ultra deep water, the preferred mooring system for MODUs and FPS is a taut leg mooring. Due to the different loading direction on the anchor point in a taut leg mooring system compared to a catenary mooring system, a new type of anchor (vertically loaded anchor or VLA) has been developed especially suited for use in taut leg mooring systems. The evolution of the VLA and the dimensioning of the VLA for a certain application are discussed showing the improvements that have been incorporated into the design. Experience gained during the installations for the P-27, P-36 and P-40 projects is presented as are some of the technical and economical benefits.
