Ship resistance to shock has been a major area of research since World War II. To study this problem a shock test facility was established on the West coast by the Bureau of Ships. This paper outlines the functions and operations of this test facility as well as describing test equipment utilized in testing procedures. A brief critique of dynamic design methods currently in use by the U. S. Navy is also presented.
