The development of offshore supply vessels (OSV's) is examined as an instructive example of the influences of regulations, technology and market forces on ship design. The adaptation of OSV's for the Coast Guard's buoy tending mission is examined. Newly compiled data on foreign OSV parameters for design purposes and a critical bibliography of references on OSV's are included as appendices.
