A modification of linear theory is suggested based on the existence of maximum amplitudes and energy density of surface waves. The value of a density is derived from a calculation test for the Wigley ship model and used in the Havelock formula modification. Such an interpretation of linear theory, as shown in the paper for different types of ships, results in a large reduction of discrepancies between the calculation and experimental data.
